Hello! āļŠāļ§ัāļŠāļ”ีāļ„่āļ°! This note is a summary of our science lesson about how plants grow. It follows our cool video script and the pages from our book. Let's review so you can be a science superstar! :-)

Key Points (āļ›āļĢāļ°āđ€āļ”็āļ™āļŠāļģāļ„ัāļ)

  • All plants grow, change, and have a life cycle (āļ§ัāļāļˆัāļāļĢāļŠีāļ§ิāļ•).
  • The life cycle of most plants starts from a seed (āđ€āļĄāļĨ็āļ”).
  • A seed needs soil (āļ”ิāļ™), water (āļ™้āļģ), and care to grow.
  • The first part to grow from a seed is the root (āļĢāļēāļ).

1. What is a Seed? (āđ€āļĄāļĨ็āļ”āļ„ืāļāļāļ°āđ„āļĢāļ™āļ°?)

A seed is a very important part of a plant. It holds the baby plant inside! There are many different kinds of seeds. They have different properties (āļĨัāļāļĐāļ“āļ°) such as size, colour, and shape.

Notes

Avocado

A large, round brown seed.

Very big!

Papaya (Pawpaw)

Small, round black seeds.

Many small seeds inside the fruit.

Watermelon

Flat, teardrop-shaped seeds.

Can be black or white.

Apple

Small, brown teardrop-shaped seeds.

Found in the core of the apple.

2. How Does a Seed Grow? (āđ€āļĄāļĨ็āļ”āļžืāļŠāđ€āļ•ิāļšāđ‚āļ•āđ„āļ”้āļāļĒ่āļēāļ‡āđ„āļĢ?)

When we plant a seed, it starts an amazing process called germination (āļāļēāļĢāļ‡āļāļ). Let's look at the steps for our tomato seed!

What Happens (āđ€āļิāļ”āļāļ°āđ„āļĢāļ‚ึ้āļ™)

From the Book

1. Planting

We place the seed in the soil and give it water.

A tomato seed is placed on top of the soil.

2. Waiting

We wait for a few days. The magic is happening underground!

The seed is under the soil, getting ready to grow.

3. The Root Appears!

A white part comes out from the seed. This is the root (āļĢāļēāļ). It grows downwards to find water.

A small white root starts to peek out of the seed.

4. Getting Bigger

The root grows longer and stronger.

The white root is now longer and more visible.

ðŸĪ” Question: What is the white part coming out from the seed? Answer: It's the root! (āļĄัāļ™āļ„ืāļāļĢāļēāļāļ™ั่āļ™āđ€āļāļ‡!)

Note. Observations from "A growing seed under the ground" (p. 25).

3. Let's Plant! (āļĄāļēāļ›āļĨูāļāļ•้āļ™āđ„āļĄ้āļัāļ™āđ€āļ–āļāļ°!)

You can be a scientist too! Just follow these easy steps from our book activity to plant your own tomato seeds.

  1. Prepare (āđ€āļ•āļĢีāļĒāļĄ): Get your tomato seeds, a flowerpot, and some soil.
  2. Put soil in the flowerpot (āđƒāļŠ่āļ”ิāļ™): Fill your pot with soil.
  3. Place seeds (āļ§āļēāļ‡āđ€āļĄāļĨ็āļ”): Put the seeds in the soil and cover them with a little more soil.
  4. Continue to care (āļ”ูāđāļĨāļ•่āļāđ€āļ™ื่āļāļ‡): Water your seeds and observe them every day. Let's see what happens! ☀️
